With the increasing complexity of vehicles and a shortage of skilled individuals, there has never been a greater need for competent technicians. Properly trained technicians are highly skilled professionals, Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) has been developed to enable identification of these technicians. ATA is a voluntary assessment programme for technicians working in the retail motor industry. It has the backing of major vehicle manufacturers, independent service and repair organisations and Automotive Skills, which is the Sector Skills Council for the Retail Motor Industry. ATA registered technicians sign and are bound by a special code of conduct. They are issued with a photo identity card, included on a public register on a dedicated website and there is publicity and point-of-sale material available.
ATA is based on National Occupational Standards to ensure that it meets the skills requirements of the retail motor industry. To achieve accreditation, a technician must pass a series of tests of practical skill and knowledge, at one of three levels of competence:
To ensure that technicians keep abreast of innovations in technology, they are reassessed every five years to maintain their accreditation. Automotive Technician Accreditation is governed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the professional association for individuals employed in the retail motor industry and the awarding body for vocational qualifications in the automotive sector.
